Paul reinforces the point, not only have we died with Christ but we have been buried with him, our death is like his, of the same kind, a death to sin. We share his death. This means that we also share his resurrection (v5). Our old self was in effect crucified with Christ so that sin in us could be brought to nothing. This means that we are no longer slaves to sin. It no longer has power over us, it no longer controls us (v6). Death sets us free from sin, we have moved out of its realm or kingdom (v7). Death in Christ is not the end, it’s not a departure to nowhere but rather a transfer into a new life in him, again, we will live with him (v8). Jesus’ resurrection was permanent, we know that he will never die again, not only does sin have no dominion but if death is defeated, then it can have no dominion over him. His death was a one off, once for all event (v9-10). The implication is important. We have died to sin. Our death, like Christ’s is once for all. We don’t need to die to sin again. We have left that life behind (v11).
