How do you picture the Houses of Parliament that Guy Fawkes tried to blow up.? Here’s a confession from a history fan. In my mind, it’s the current Palace of Westminster, complete with Big Ben and the iconic Elizabeth Tower. However, that can’t be right for a few reasons. The biggest one, as I was reminded when we took a Thames river cruise is that the original palace was rebuilt. Apparently a couple of careless workmen succeeded where the plotters failed.
Lesson number one, often we worry about those who deliberately conspire to cause trouble but the greatest danger often comes from those who thoughtlessly blunder about.
Lesson number two. Well let me ask a question. How many times did God call Samuel that night? If you answered “three” then you are in good company I suspect. Look again at 1 Samuel 3 though. Actually, he goes to Eli three times. It’s the fourth when he allows the Lord to speak to him.
I’ve often found that Bible study discussions can drift into opinions based on what we think and remember the Bible saying but our memories can play tricks. That’s why the best Bible studies are with Bibles open and start with “what does the text actually say?”
Check your memory.
