The Secret Father

I was speaking about the Lord’s Prayer on the Daily Dose the other day.  You can watch back here or listen back here.  A phrase stood out to me that I’d never really picked up on before.

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret

(Matthew 6:6)

Well, we all know about the importance of seeking privacy for prayer and not looking to be noticed and we can do that because we know that God hears our prayers in secret.  However I’d never really picked up on the point before that God, our father “is in secret.”

What does that phrase mean? Well, it’s one way of saying that God is invisible, hidden from visible sight. God is invisible because he is Spirit and that means:

  • That God is simple. He is not made up of parts (complex) meaning that all of God’s attributes are essential to his nature. He isn’t going to stop being merciful and kind, He is Love. He is not going to stop being good, just, sovereign.  God will not change. He is faithful.
  • God is not constrained by time and space. He is everywhere. He transcends time and space so that he is omnipresent and omniscience.
  • Though God cannot be seen, he sees everything. He is omniscient and knows everything.

Our approach to prayer is determined by God’s character.  All of those statements above are good reasons for why we can come to God with our requests and trust him to answer our prayers.

Furthermore, these all point to why we find the quiet, secret place to talk to him.  We don’t need to find a street corner or public place to shout our prayers in order to get the attention of others. And so often, if we are honest, our prayers are more about communicating to others than they are about talking to God.  You may have heard jokes about people who have lived by faith and refused to ask other people for help or money but were unafraid to mention their needs in prayer and prayer requests.  Wouldn’t they have done better to be open with their requests and needs?  Yet I think we can all be like that at times, spiritualising things by turning them into prayer.

So we don’t need to get the attention and approval of others because we have got God’s attention. And this God, our Father prioritises his relationship with us. Indeed, his invisibility means that the very people who are trying to get the attention of others and the very people whose attention we seek cannot and do not see God.

Yet in our prayers, God is seen, God is known. It’s there at the place where we are not concerned about what others see, know and think that we can open our hearts to him. It’s there as we open our hearts to him that we learn who he is and what his will is so that we might delight our hearts in him.

Where will you run, my soul
Where will you go when wells run dry
When the wind starts to blow
How you gonna keep this flame alive

In the fading light when night is breaking
I know You will always be waiting
You’ll always be there
I’m running to the secret place

Where You are, where You are
I sing to You of all the ways
You stole my heart, stole my heart
Better is a moment that I spend with You

Than a million other days away
I’m running, I’m running
I’m running to the secret place
You are my only hope
You are the Rock on which I stand

You will not let me go
I know that I am safe inside Your hands
In the fading light when night is breaking
I know You will always be waiting
You’ll always be there
I’m running to the secret place

Where You are, where You are
I sing to You of all the ways
You stole my heart, stole my heart
Better is a moment that I spend with You

Than a million other days away
I’m running, I’m running
I’m running to the secret place
Hands are lifted high, hearts awake to life

We are satisfied here with You, here with You
Chains will hit the floor, broken lives restored
We couldn’t ask for more here with You, here with You
I’m running to the secret place
Where You are, where You are

I sing to You of all the ways
You stole my heart, stole my heart
Better is a moment that I spend with You
Than a million other days away
I’m running, I’m running
I’m running to the secret place
