The other day I wrote about why there is power and authority in the name of Jesus. Today I wanted to say a little bit more about why Jesus’ name is beautiful and wonderful.
Think about your own name. I’m called David John. If you were to look them up in one of those old books of baby names, you’ll find that they have meanings. If I remember correctly David means “beloved” and John means “gift from God.”
Now we give our kids names for all sorts of reason. Sometimes it’s because we want to associate our family with a special place, perhaps where we met. Sometimes kids get named after famous people at the time. Often it’s just because we like the sound of a name. However, some of us had our names chosen for us because our parents were particularly drawn to the meaning of them.
The names of people we read about in Scripture are particularly associated with meanings, not just because the parents liked the ideas associated with the names and wished those things for their children but often because, through divine revelation, they knew that the meaning of the name fitted the character or calling of the child.
In Jesus’ case, his name points us to the God who saves or who is pour salvation. That’s where the beauty and wonder is in his name. The beauty is in everything that his name represents, that he is the one who heals, the one who forgives, the one who rescues.
When I declare that Jesus’ name is beautiful, I am saying that because of everything that he has done for me, everything that he is doing and everything that he will do.
But more than that. The name represents his character, just as Yahweh points to God’s character as the one who makes and keeps covenant with his people and then acts to deliver, protect and to provide for his covenant people. God’s name is beautiful because it points us to his character, to his love and compassion, to his power and glory. The name Jesus does exactly the same.
