We are hoping to have baptisms at our church this Sunday. Sadly, we won’t be able to be at our church for this. However, we are really excited that it is happening. I don’t think that there is much more exciting in the life of the church than seeing people get baptised, especially when it’s believers’ baptism.
Baptism is important for a number of reasons. First, it is something that Jesus both commanded, he sent out his disciples to make more disciples and baptise them, and set an example by being baptised himself.
Secondly, baptism is closely identified with profession of faith and salvation. It’s not that the water does anything magical or mystical for you. It’s that the instruction to those convicted of sin seems to consistently be “repent and be baptised.” Baptism is how we publicly confess that we have repented and believed in our hearts.
Baptism also presents us with a number of beautiful images which Scripture tells us about.
- Baptism represents the washing away of sin. It’s a bath.
- Baptism reminds us both of the Crossing of the Red Sea and Noah’s ark. It’s a rescue operation.
- Baptism points us to how we have been united with Christ in his death and resurrection. It’s a birthing pool!
So we are excited to see people wanting to get baptised and praying for more!
