Happy 100th birthday Dick Lucas

Dick Lucas is 100 today, an incredible achievement.  I suspect that many readers both of younger age and from charismatic backgrounds may be unfamiliar with who Dick Lucas is but he is in fact one of the most significant figures in modern reformed/evangelical Christianity, alongside John Stott and Martyn Lloyd Jones.

I remember finding some tapes of his preaching amongst my parents’ collection in my late teens and listening to them late in the evening when I should have been going off to sleep, captivated by the electric atmosphere of his preaching.  I think I only had the opportunity to hear him preach once live and by then he was into his 80s.

Yet Lucas’ ministry has  shaped many of us whether or not we have had three opportunity to know him or hear him.  That’s for a couple of reasons.  First because Lucas modelled pastoral ministry, growing a church in the city of London that still has a wide impact today

Lucas pioneered midweek ministry to city workers. The ministry continues today.  Many if those workers have faithfully supported ministry and training.

He was a primary mover in restoring expository preaching to its rightful place. This was not only through his own example but through his commitment to seeing others equipped to do this, here and around the world.

We have many reasons to be thankful to God for Dick Lucas and to wish him a happy and blessed birthday.
