Following the Unite the Kingdom rally, where do we go from here ?

I grieve not just the events of last Saturday but more so the way in which Christians and church leaders participated and the way we have seen excuses made over the past few days and even endorsements for participation.

We need to be 100 percent clear that you cannot claim to march under the banner of King Jesus and follow his lead whilst at the same time choosing to match under Tommy Robinson’s banner, following his lead.

I have previously been a member of the FIEC’s pastor’s network.  One thing that the FIEC have is as well as their statement of faith, a number of additional positions statements in key issues they seem important.  I hope that whether we agree with those specific FIEC statements, we can see the benefit of this. There was a requirement by pastors and churches to sign up to this statements if they wanted to belong.

I do not see how it could be compatible for Christians or a church to be part of an Evangelical  Gospel  network or partnership and at the same time act or speak in a way that gives cover to the Far Right.

I believe that the FIEC model provides a way forward.  I would ask them to add a similar statement around far right political agendas, racism and nationalism.  I would encourage others including New Frontiers spheres, Grace Baptists,  EFCC, IPC,  Affinity and the Evsngelical Alliance to do likewise.

What this means also is that at individual and church level we may have to make some tough decisions about partnership, just as we would on other things. I’m clear about who I will partner with and work with. Even this last week, I had to make a difficult decision not to work with someone on a matter and that was specifically due to the question of Unite the Kingdom. These decisions may even feel costly but we have to trust God’s providence.
