The invasion we need to guard against

I’ve talked a little bit here about how the language of “invasion” is being used to describe asylum seekers and immigrants. Christian Nationalism puts the focus on nation states and ethno-cultural groups and says that these are the things that need to be protected.

Once again, they miss what Scripture actually tells us.

In Acts 2:28-31, Paul warns the Ephesian elders to keep watch over themselves because they face the threat of invasion. The invasion is by wolves, false shepherds and teachers who will infiltrate the church with a false Gospel, distorting God’s Word and bringing discussion. The invasion is even right into hearts and comedy even from those within the church.

The focus of Christian pastors needs to be on protecting Christ’s church from danger not the borders of Britain or America.

Given that the particular form of Christian Nationalism we see requires a serious distortion of God’s Word and given that it is wedded to a secular ethno-cultural nationalism that is idolatrous, I would argue that this is itself the pressing danger at the moment.

The fruit of Christian Nationalism can be seen, it brings a spirit of fear into the church, it turns Christians away from Biblical commands to love our neighbours and to take the Gospel to them.

There have been and there will be other dangers and threats to the flock along the way but this is certainly a big danger at the moment.  Elders have a responsibility to guard against it.
