An update on engaging with Christian Nationalism

Regular readers will be aware of two things.  First that I spent a significant part of last year engaging with the topic of Christian Nationalism. You will also be aware that I hit the pause button on writing on the subject because I felt that I had probably contributed as much as I could at that point and further engagement wasn’t going to change much.

However, that wasn’t because I thought the issue was no longer important.  I believe it remains live.  The significance is both in terms of the particular issues within the roots of the movement including Federal Vision and dominion theology but also because I think that the movement in all its toxicity as an idolatrous false gospel remains a significant and serious threat.  This is particularly true for those of us engaging in urban context mission for two reasons. First, this false Gospel is being used to appeal to white working class people.  Secondly because it is an ideology that demonises and dehumanises those from non white -British ethnic backgrounds that we seek to serve.   However, I felt that I probably had done as much as I could in terms of a deep dive into the movement.  I’d also offered the opportunity for conversation with those taking a different position to me but there wasn’t any pick up.  Finally I think that something this significant needs those with national platforms to take the issue on, pick up the baton and run with it.

I’ve been thinking about whether there is anything more that I can contribute at the moment and I’ve concluded that one thing I can do is to bring together all the output I produced last year into book form.,  I don’t expect this to be taken up by a publisher, I suspect that they won’t be able to justify the financial outlay (though it’s available to any publisher who is interested). Rather, I intend to publish it as one of my free e-books here on the publications page.    There’s also a few little extra pieces I intend to include in that and I’ll be sharing them as individual posts over the next week or so.  First, I’m going to provide a bit more historical background.  Secondly I have a couple of pieces fleshing out the problems with the Dominion Theology strand.

A couple of other things that are coming up are as follows.

  1. I’ve been asked to write something article length or a Christian publication on the subject.  I’ll let you know if and when this comes out.
  2. A couple of people have expressed interest in some podcast/video interviews to explore the subject.  Again, watch this space.
