Who is winning the war?

This is a question that I asked at our Life Group yesterday.   I was referring to three wars. The first was the war in Ukraine and the second the Iran war.

It’s tempting to assume that it’s Russia that is winning in Ukraine, they’ve seized significant territory and cause horrendous damage.  In Iran it looks like the Israeli-American alliance is victorious. They’ve struck the Iranian regime with massive force.

However, every day that the regime remains in power is a victory for them.  It’s another day when Israel and the US have not met their objectives.   Iran and Ukraine have suffered heavy losses but they are not overwhelmed, not conquered.

The third war is a spiritual battle, it’s the one described in Ephesians 6 and Romans 8. Here’s the encouragement.  Every day may feel like a tough battle and you may feel like much less than a conqueror.  Maybe you resisted some temptations, maybe you got to use the gifts God has given you.  At the same time, you’ve experienced real suffering, you’ve struggled, perhaps you did give in to a particular temptation.

Yet, you have not been overwhelmed, not consumed in the fire, not destroyed as Satan would wish.  That’s another day of victory. The enemy has not won.

What does Ephesians 6 ask us to do when we have our armour on?  It simply asks us to stand.
