Reform’s Detention centres proposal is nonsense .. intentionally so

You may have seen the proposal by Reform UK to put asylum centres in Green voting constituencies.  There has been outrage at this but it is worth remembering before you join in that this is their intention.

Why is it nonsense?

  1. If feasible it would affect voters from all parties.  It is likely that seats at the General Election will be won on quite small minority votes due to the splintering of the electorate.
  2. It would not be lawfully possible.  This would be an administrative decision subject to judicial review
  3. It is inconsistent with Reform’s aim to  significantly reduce immigration and eliminate the need for such centres.
  4. It isn’t actually going to convince potential Green voters to change their mind. They will loath Reform all the more. In some areas it will increase support for them as part of tactical voting to stop Reform UK.

However, I suspect Nigel Farage knows this.  His aim is likely to be two-fold

  1. To provoke Green Party supporters into a reaction which enables him to present them as hypocritical nimbys.
  2. To rally his base and keep those who are wobbling on board.  The gimmick comes at a time when Reform’s poll lead seems to be narrowing, Restore Britain are looking to take away votes from them on the Right and Kemi Badenoch is getting good press over the Mandelson scandal.

This sadly is the kind of identity politics that we are becoming used to. Christians should desire healthy and honest political discourse. Let’s pray for better.
