Remember May 11th and the Bradford City Fire Disaster

It’s 41 years now since the Bradford City fire disaster.  For many Bradfordians today is one full of painful memories.  It struck me this year though that for many, it’s the days that followed that carry the hardest memories.  This was a time before social media.  We saw the reports on the news but it was only on Monday morning arriving at school that those who had been at the game were talking about it, already the rumours were circulating and then there was the heartbreak when this was confirmed to us by our teachers.  One of our own, Adrian Wright had died in the fire along with his grandad.  The next day we were able to go to the ground to lay flowers and see the scene of devastation for the first time.

And then there’s the reality that for so many, in effect May 11th is a day that has still not ended.  Those that were there in the stands continue with the physical and mental scars of the day.  Meanwhile there are families, mums, dads, wives, children still waiting for their loved ones to come home from the game.

Today, I’m just asking you to pause for a moment and remember that day with me.  Use the opportunity to pray for those who are still grieving, those that are still living with scars from the Bradford Fire Disaster.
