Credentials (Galatians 1:11-24)

Here’s a sample “Dig Deeper” style Bible study on part of Galatians 1. Our church used it for our Life Group yesterday. Watch out for an article talking us through this passage tomorrow.

For Starters

What do you do  if someone makes a claim about something big to you (this could be good news or bad news)?

A Look at the Text (what does it say)

Remember “Catchphrase”? The aim here is not discussion/debate – that will come later.  “Say what you see”.

Where does Paul not get his Gospel from/Not Get it from? (v11-12)

What was Paul’s life like prior to him becoming a Christian? (v13-14)

What did God do and how did Paul respond (v15-16)

What happened three years later? Where did Paul go, who did he see? (v18-21)

What was the Jerusalem/Judean Church’s assessment of Paul and his Gospel? (v22-24)

  1. Digging a Little Deeper (what does it mean)

Who do you think Paul is comparing himself with/putting himself on the same level as?

Why do you think this was important?  What implications did it have for the church in Galatia?

A Look at ourselves (application)

I don’t think we are meant to follow Paul’s example here. This is not a textbook example for what church leaders need to do to prove their credentials.  Paul’s situation is unique.

What implications do Paul’s claims have for us as we study Galatians together? How do we discern/check whether someone/something is contradicting the Gospel?
