Assurance and Security

One of the blessings that we become heirs of in Christ is assurance.  Assurance is the certain confidence that you have been forgiven of your sin and have eternal life.  Combine that with security and we have the idea that a believer can know both that their sins are forgiven and that they will never lose this salvation.  This is sometimes referred to as “once saved always saved” and historically has been referred to as “the perseverance of the saints.”

Galatians 3 is central to this promise of assurance.  You see, there are two things to consider here. First, we are told that salvation is what God does, it is his work not ours.  We do not create or earn our own salvation by our own attempts at obeying God’s Law.  Salvation isn’t dependent on me and that’s good news because I am fallible and fragile. I know that I will fail.

Secondly, if it is dependent upon God, then we are also told something important about his character. God is faithful, he keeps his covenant promises. His covenants are permanent and irrevocable. God does not go back on his word.

Both my assurance and my security are dependent not on me but on the faithful unchanging God who will not change his mind, turn his back on me, let me down or lose me from his hand.
