When Moses is in the wilderness, he spots a bush on fire, the famous burning bush. However, it’s not the fact that a bush is on fire that gets his attention. This may well have been a normal sight for him. What really is the miracle there? It’s the fact that the bush itself is not consumed or burnt up.
The burning bush is both a miraculous event that draws Moses’ attention and a sign that tells us something about God and his people. Just as the bush was on fire but not consumed by it, so too Moses and God’s people could live with the God who is an all consuming fire in their midst and not fear that they would be burnt, harmed, consumed, destroyed.
Perhaps we too are hesitant to surrender all to God because we fear what will happen if we pray “send through fire” of the Holy Spirit. Yet, the promise of the burning bush remains true. We can live with the Holy God in our midst, through the Spirit filling our lives and be refined, renewed, restored. We will not be consumed. We will not be destroyed.
