Does Britain have a covenant with God?

In this interview, Christopher Wickland argues that England and indeed the whole United Kingdom has made covenants with God.  The result is that if we have abandoned them, we are now under the curses of Deuteronomy.

There has been a particular focus on the curse of a foreign people from far off coming to take over the land. Those like Chris making the argument believe that this is about Islam.

I respond here.

We should not confuse the idea of God making a covenant with his people with human attempts to make covenants.  The former is about God’s grace to those he chooses. That’s what the covenants with Abraham, Moses and David are about. These are not covenants with nations or ethnic groups.

The British covenants he talks about are human attempts to reach God. Like all man made religions, this means the burdens and judgements we place upon ourselves become legalism.

This is another reason why we should stick to preaching the Gospel and not legalism.
