Should Hezbollah be part of the Iran ceasefire?

A number of politicians including Ed Davey have been pushing for Keir Starmer to put pressure in Israel regarding Hezbollah. They want multilateral action to disarm Hezbollah but are also arguing that Israeli action against Hezbollah is putting at risk the Iran ceasefire. Iran have also argued that Hezbollah should be beneficiaries to the ceasefire

Whatever your views on the US-Israeli operation against Iran it is worth observing that:

  1. Israel remain our best hope of disarming Hezbollah
  2. You can’t have your cake and eat it.  Either Hezbollah operate independently of Iran and therefore are nothing to do with the Iranian war, or Hezbollah are intrinsically linked to Iran and therefore should be party to the ceasefire. However, this would also mean that Iran has been engaged in conflict against Israel and her allies through such proxies which would make the war legitimate through self defence.

My points here are not so much about the rights and wrongs of the war.  I personally remain of the view that action against  Iran was legitimate but that the approach taken by Donald Trump has been ill thought out and made the situation worse

However, British politicians seeking to engage on the matter need to think through their position consistently.  Christians too will hold different views on the rights and wrongs of the conflict but also need to think through our positions carefully and consistently.
