As mentioned in recent articles and on the Faithroots Podcast, one of the things I’m trying to do is to encourage us to think about how we share the good news about Jesus with those who have no or very limited foundational knowledge about him.
So, the focus of our podcasts over the next few months will be on Jesus and the Gospels. Part of that will be encouraging people to spend time looking at the actual recorded events and teaching of Jesus’ life.
So, I’ve begun recording a retelling of Luke’s Gospel in my own words, broken into short segments. The idea is that as well as listening to them yourself, you can share with others. This may be a resource to use with children too. However, I also wanted to demonstrate that it is possible without much effort simply to tell the stories in your own words. So better still, I’d encourage you to try that.
Here’s the first batch. Why not
- Read Luke 1 for yourself
- Listen to each of the retellings
- Read the chapter again in your Bible
- Use the questions that follow below to help you think about what the passages are saying.
- Do the retellings accurately reflect the text of the Gospel? In what way do they differ?
- Did anything stand out to you from the oral retellings?
- Can you now retell at least one of the stories in your own words?
- Compare how Luke starts his gospel with Matthew, Mark and John. What is similar? What is different?
- Why do you think Luke chooses to include the things he does and exclude other bits (e.g. he does not mention the wise men)?
- Why do you think that Luke interrupts the account of John the Baptist’s birth to tell us about Gabriel appearing to Mary?
- What is God saying to us through this chapter?
