I recently wrote about a new college set up in Oxford that purports to be a Classical Christian College.
Now I appreciate that the college are unlikely to pick up on my little blog. However, I was hoping to encourage people to at least ask those questions themselves before getting involved in promoting Selden College. I would hope that we would be seeing some responses to questions before further promotion.
I want to pick up here specifically on the Douglas Wilson/Federal Vision link. It seems that whenever concerns are raised about this that pushback follows a familiar line and so it has turned out in this case.
First, we are told that such and such an event, organisation of person isn’t really that linked to Douglas Wilson and Federal Vision. In this case, I’ve been told that. This despite the fact that the majority of the leadership team and staff have either studied, taught or sent their own family to study at Wilson’s college, New St Andrews. Selden College have organised a promotional event known as a Psalm Roar and the main person leading the event will be one of the New St Andrews’ staff.
Secondly, we are reassured by people promoting and advocating for such institutions that they themselves have their doubts about and issues with Wilson and Federal Vision. However, we are told that we must be willing to give the benefit of the doubt and recognise and draw upon the good things from Federal Vision/Douglas Wilson/New St Andrews.
These two claims beg the questions.
- Are you able to clearly articulate the places where you specifically disagree with Wilson/Federal Vision?
- What are the good points that we need to take on board?
Until there is clarity on these things, I don’t see how we can simply give this new college or some of the other related things happening through benefit of the doubt.
