Putin’s victories

At the end of last week, President Trump welcomed President Putin to Alaska.  This week Vladimir Zelensky heads to the White House joined by a number of European leaders to support him

I’ve commented previously that Trump”s apparent willingness to carve up Ukraine, requiring mineral rights for the US whilst other territory is given up by Ukraine to Russia has been a form of victory for Putin.

Numerous other commentators have identified last week’s meeting as another Putin victory.  One of his objectives has been to put Russia back on the world stage. Here we see Russia and the US holding summits just like they did in the Cold War days, seeking to make deals that continue the carve up of Europe

I would argue that the sight of European leaders heading off to the Whitehouse to try and support Zelensky whilst understandable and perhaps necessary, is another victory for Putin.  It is a visible indication of divisions within NATO.

We are at quite a dangerous stage in the conflict. The future of Ukraine and with Ukraine of Europe’s future peace and security remains in the balance.  Western leaders need to stop and consider what Putin’s main objectives are and whether their own actions resist or enable Putin’s aims.

Christians need to keep praying for Ukraine and for the wider implications for Europe.
