I was reading James Burnett’s December article in Evangelicals Now about faithful ministry. One section jumped out at me for obvious reasons. Burnett describes a flight from Birmingham airport where he had met a couple of people, one of whom he describes aa playing guitar in a huge church plant. I must admit that such a comment invites a game of “guess the church plant” in my mind. Generally speaking church plants are not huge round here. I can only think of one that might count as large and that one has been going since pre pandemic, with a large staff team, building and multiple services, it hardly counts as a plant now.
However, what caught my eye was his comment that if he were called to plant a church in Birmingham then he would start by having a Bible study with the other person he met.
Well, I’m sure that he would do other things as well. However, he might be encouraged to know that church planting in Birmingham has started like that on a few occasions. I’ve been involved with one congregation starting because the leader invited people he met round his house to study the Bible. On another occasion a congregation grew out of a youth Bible study.
So I’m up for the idea of people willing to open homes and open the Bible with non Christians here in Brum. This does of course require people to be actually rather than hypothetically called here. Maybe that could be you?
if you would like to get involved in urban Church planting in the West Midlands, I’d love to hear from you
