Where are God’s people?

The plagues, marking out the land and the people of Egypt for curse rather than blessing is a fulfilment of Genesis 12:1-3.  God had promised that those who blessed Abraham and his offspring would be blessed and so it had been the case when Joseph came down to Egypt. He had also warned that those who cursed Abraham and his offspring would be cursed.  The Egyptians are marked out as not God’s people and the land as not the place of his presence and blessing. Of course, God was present there and rules over all but here to punish and destroy instead of the  bless, rule and protect.

Yet, the people of Israel are kept safe.  They are God’s people and they are enjoying his provision and protection as he steps in to deliver them.  Goshen becomes to them a mini Cannan or Eden, home away from home.  There they find shelter.
