Living through a lengthy lockdown -facing the emotional challenges

Below is our latest Afternoon Tea conversation.  The key points from the discussion were

  • Our experience of lockdown may feel very similar to a grieving process
  • The following 7 stages of grieving have been identified
    • SHOCK & DENIAL- You will probably react to learning of the loss with numbed disbelief. …
    • PAIN & GUILT- …
    • ANGER & BARGAINING- …
    • “DEPRESSION”, REFLECTION, LONELINESS- …
    • THE UPWARD TURN- …
    • RECONSTRUCTION & WORKING THROUGH- …
    • ACCEPTANCE & HOPE-
  • We should not see this as a linear process, rather we can cycle through and repeat stages in a different order. Also you may encounter more than one stage at the same time
  • Some people experience different stages for longer or shorter periods of time, however we should watch out for those who seem stuck at a specific stage.
  • It is helpful to know and understand the stage you are at.
  • Acceptance and hope often requires reconstruction as rehabilitation often involves a changed way of living (for example, we do not simply replicate our usual services online)
