Godless?

In this video, I describe Christmas as part of the evidence that points to the reality of the God who is Love, who created us and who is actively involved, even stepping down into history. I also said that that when it comes to apologetics, some people prefer to separate out proof of God’s existence from the question of what God is like and that he is the God of the Bible.

For various reasons, I find it unhelpful to follow that two stage approach and attempt to prove in the abstract that a greater/supreme entity exists.  There are two reasons for that. The first is that if we simply want to prove that there is something greater, a first cause, a foundation if you like then that point is rather moot because we are not really proving anything that anyone would really disagree with.

It is obvious that there is something that is both infinite and eternal and therefore the source of all power, energy and life in the Universe.  For many evolutionists today, who don’t accept the creation narrative of Genesis 1, there is the acceptance that the Universe had  beginning in time with The Big Bang and has an end both in that one day it will end in terms of time but also that it has boundaries. This means that there must be something beyond/outside of space and time even if it is not personal and even if we cannot describe or know what it is. Others have moved towards the view that the Universe is itself infinite and eternal. It has no beginning or end and therefore the source of light, power, energy and life is found within the Universe itself (you could say that the Universe has life in itself). The logical consequence of this is to say that many people are not truly atheists even though they believe and claim that they are.

The other reason is a question of relevance.  You see, it is only because the God we believe in is the God of the Bible and so is personal, is love, chooses to act in our world and is knowable that there is any point beyond intellectual curiosity in considering his existence.  You see, even if there is a first cause, a supreme entity, if that being is impersonal, unknowable and disinterested in us, then it is irrelevant to our life. Many people, whatever they claim live as though this is exactly what God is like.  There are many people who are in effect practically atheists even though they deny it and claim to believe in God.

This Christmas time I would like to encourage you to discover the true and living God who is light and life who loves you, who made you and who in the person of Jesus stepped down into history to save you.

No it is not obvious. That is a false claim made by someone who knows he cannot show this to be the case. He must present his opinion as fact. There is nothing about the Big Bang theory that says that there has to be something outside of the universe. That is a intentional falsehood being claimed by a christian, a christian whose bible says not to lie.

Nice try to convince yourself that everyone agrees with you but that is not the case. An eternal universe isn’t a magical being with feelings. There is no reason to claim that the universe has “life”. It is a space with things in it. No magical nonsense needed.
